The Liberty University football program began play in 1973, and has competed in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) since 2019. The Flames have an all-time record of 286-329-11, but have had some success in their recent history.
The Flames' most successful era came under head coach Hugh Freeze, who led the team from 2019 to 2022. During his four-year tenure, Freeze led the Flames to a 34-15 record, including two bowl victories. He also led the Flames to their first-ever national ranking in 2020.
The Flames have had several notable players over the years, including:
- Malik Willis (third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2022 NFL Draft)
- Rashad Jennings (two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants)
- Antonio Gandy-Golden (fourth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in the 2020 NFL Draft)
- Mike Strachan (seventh-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2022 NFL Draft)
- Demario Douglas (undrafted free agent signee of the New York Jets in 2022)
